The mini-load system (as it is referred to) was installed and commissioned by Schaefer Austria and took approximately 8 months to complete, with the Spar go-live in Feb 2016.

This automated crane system will allow Spar SR to increase its range and volume whilst reducing its overall supply chain costs.

Due to ongoing space constraints and in line with international trends, the logistic teams of Central Office and Spar South Rand have embarked on an exercise to introduce a high-tech solution to better utilise current warehouse space, and to improve supply chain efficiencies by consolidating a wide range of slow-moving items into a Central slow moving warehouse. At the heart of this is the Mini-load, an automated high-speed crane system that is the first of its kind in Spar SA. The intention is to take a range of around 6000 SKU’s/line items out of each inland regional DC’s and consolidate it into this centralised distribution facility which in turn will service the Inland DC’s in time to come. The mini-load consist of 4 decanting stations where shrinks will be decanted into bins and from there be transported on conveyor belts to one of 3 automated high-speed cranes. These 3 cranes will put away the bins into one of 30 000 positions and when required bring it down into one of 2100 pick face positions.

Spar South Rand is situated in Jetpark Johannesburg and is responsible for delivering a wide range of goods to some 420 Spar, Tops, Express and Pharmacy stores across Gauteng, Free State, North West, Northern Cape and Mpumalanga.

Spar SA consists of 7 DC’s and currently distributes to some 1997 Spar, Tops, Express, Pharmacies and Build-it stores in SA and its neighbouring countries namely Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Angola.

Spar is an international Retail company trading in some 40 countries world-wide and Spar SA has been a member of this international group since 1963.
