A collaborative effort between two South African institutions, Aerosud Innovation Centre and the CSIR, resulted in the creation of the Aeroswift machine.  The Aeroswift machine is state-of-the-art and is the world’s largest and fastest powder bed metal 3D printer with a build volume of 2m x 0.6m x 0.6m.  The system is used to produce titanium parts for high-value, low-volume industries such as the Aerospace industry.  Additive manufacturing (or 3D printing) is a relatively new manufacturing technology and has a number of advantages over other manufacturing techniques.  The biggest advantage is the fact that it allows for highly complex parts to be manufactured. This gives designers the freedom to design parts that are lighter, more efficient and with increased functionality.

NB The 3D printer is operational on a regular basis, but Aeroswift cannot guarantee that it will be running that day.  However, every effort will be made for a print build to be scheduled for the site visit.
