Tumelo Home for the Mentally Handicapped Children

Care for the mentally and physically challenged in an area that urgently required it tended towards non-existence in the 1990’s. The paradigm shift in embracing change emanated from Dr Moses who realised a vision of providing a centre that could eradicate child neglect. Dr Moses intended to transform a community that placed no emphasis on the care of handicapped children during the work day by providing a viable day care centre.

Many challenges were faced as many children that required custodial care were left abandoned by their parents, at the centre. Placed in a predicament, and in an attempt to find a humane solution, Dr Moses and his now late wife Orinah, had to implement an immediate plan of action which was to run the day care facility as a 24 hour care centre.

In a community that was financially challenged and with the increasing number of children, the centre became highly dependent on funding. Funding over the years allowed the Home to develop from a shack – like dwelling to a brick-face building that has foundation and is now dignified. Tumelo Home currently houses 45 severely intellectually and physically incapacitated children and youth .This centre is a registered NPO and is licensed by the Department of Health in Gauteng under the Mental Healthcare Act. It is also registered with SARS as a PBO – issuing Section 18A certification for donations received and holds a level 4 BBBEE status.
